Sensory Integration Services

What is sensory integration?
From the moment we are born (and even before), we learn to interact with the world by interpreting and reacting to the stimuli we are receiving from the outside. Gradually, through experience, and through our senses (touch, movement, body position, hearing, smell, vision, and taste), we learn to have appropriate responses to the stimuli around. What would happen, if for some reason, you could not interpret those stimuli? How would you function in a world that doesn't make sense to you?

  • Are under-active to sensory stimulation
  • Have activity level that is unusually high or low
  • Have coordiation problems
  • Have delays in speech, language, motor skills or academic achievement
  • Have poor organization of behavior
  • Have poor self concept
Sensory Integration
Examples of Dysfunction
  1. John, 2 years old, sits on the floor and jumps up and down so hard that we are afraid he might hurt himself.
  2. Julie, 4 years old, won't keep her clothes on. She always takes them off, even in public.
  3. Mark, 8 years old, never pays attention at school, he seems too distracted by everything around him and he is failing his grade.
  4. Enrike is a very picky eater, he is losing weight and will only eat the same food over and over again.

Individuals with SI dysfunction can be evaluated and treated through an approach that gradually provides challenges and allows them to appropriately respond to the situation. The skills gained in therapy can later be generalized in daily living situations.
